On December 11, 1964, Cuban Revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara addressed the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York. In his famous “Colonialism is Doomed”, Che severely upbraided the United States for allowing the apartheid to go on in South Africa. Che also called for change and shamed the United States for engaging in interventionism in areas where he believed she had no right to intervene. Others did not escape his harsh criticism as Che berated the western nations for mercilessly exploiting the situation in the Congo to satisfy their imperialist desires. During his time in the General Assembly, two assassinations attempts were made on his life. One woman with a knife jumped a fence but was arrested before entering the building. Two men from the Cuban Nationalist Movement fired a bazooka at the building but it fell harmlessly into the East River. A bomb threat was also made that day. Che Guevara would be executed three years later, at the age of 39, in Bolivia, with the help of the CIA.
